Conformity assessment of Tequila

The evaluation of conformity with this standard will be carried out by the pertinent agencies or by persons certified and, if applicable, approved by the SE

Conformity assessment of both the Tequila product and its manufacturing process, refers to the activity of supervising, inspecting and issuing an opinion of compliance or non-compliance with the specifications of the Mexican Official Standard NOM-006-SCFI-2012, Alcoholic Beverages-Tequila-Specifications (NOM). In this way obtain a certificate or official evidence of the validity of the product and process.

Which agency performs the Conformity Assessment of Tequila?

Conformity evaluation with this standard will be carried out by the pertinent agencies or by certified persons and, if applicable, approved by the SE: (Certification Agencies, Verification Units and Testing or Calibration Laboratories), according to what is established in the LFMN and its Regulation. This will be done without prejudice to the inspection and surveillance powers of the competent authorities.

Conformity assessment at the request of a party may be obtained from the DGN, only if there are no persons accredited and, if applicable, approved by the SE. In accordance with the provisions of the Law, the expenses derived from the verifications resulting from the conformity assessment acts of this standard, both ordinary and extraordinary, permanent and additional, will be the responsibility of the individuals or legal entities to whom such acts are performed.

The most prominent civil organization with extensive experience in conformity assessment, in addition to other competencies necessary for the tequila industry, is the Consejo Regulador del Tequila A.C. (CRT). This entity is recognized by the Dirección General de Normas de la Secretaría de Economía and accredited by the Entidad Mexicana de Acreditación A.C. to act as Inspection Unit, Testing Laboratory and as Greenhouse Gas Certification and Verification Body (authorized by PROFEPA).

What documents or authorizations do I obtain with the Conformity Assessment?

Technical compliance report

In order to issue the compliance report with this NOM, the verification unit accredited and approved according to the LFMN, must perform a visual inspection and verification to assess compliance at the producer's facilities. The verification shall cover from the batch preparation, the reception of the agave of the tequilana weber species blue variety, to the finished product.

Said report must specify that it was verified, among other applicable provisions:

a) The location of the producing plant, within the territory indicated in the declaration of the appellation of origin "Tequila".

b) The affirmation that the water used in its production process is drinkable.

c) That it was accredited to have the supply of agave of the species tequilana weber blue variety necessary to produce Tequila, harvested within the territory of Appellation of Origin, certified by the Certification Body accredited and approved according to the LFMN, or if applicable, with the agave purchase contracts.

Certificate of compliance

To issue the certificate of compliance with this standard, the accredited and approved certification body according to the LFMN must ensure that the product complies with this NOM.

This certificate must specify that it has been verified, among other applicable legal requirements, that it has:

(a) A technical opinion issued by the verification unit accredited and approved according to LFMN.

b) Authorization to produce Tequila and/or 100% Tequila, issued by the DGN of the SE according to the procedure registered in the Federal Registry of Procedures and Services, identified with the homoclave: "SE-04-018 Authorization to produce Tequila and/or 100% Agave Tequila", or the one that replaces it.

c) Producer's Registration Number that will accompany the NOM Official Password issued by the Certification Body.

d) Authorization for the use of the Appellation of Origin Tequila issued by IMPI.

In accordance with the provisions of the LFMN, the expenses generated by the verifications resulting from the conformity assessment acts with this NOM will be the responsibility of the individuals or legal entities to whom they are performed.

Commercial information compliance report

In order to issue a compliance report with this NOM regarding commercial information, the accredited and approved verification unit, according to LFMN, must perform a visual inspection of the label and verify compliance with sections 11.1 and 11.2 of this standard.

Tequila Regulatory Council (CRT, Consejo Regulador del Tequila A.C.)

The Consejo Regulador del Tequila A.C. (CRT) is a civil entity that brings together the various participants in the Agave-Tequila chain, such as agave producers, tequila manufacturers, bottling companies, distributors, marketers and government agencies. Founded on May 17, 1994, this organization operates on a non-profit basis. One of its main responsibilities is to protect the Tequila Appellation of Origin, both nationally and internationally, to assure consumers of the authenticity of the product.
