Tequila Labeling

Tequila labeling is regulated so that the information provided to consumers is transparent and accurate

According to the Tequila Standard (NOM-006-SCFI-2012), each container must bear a clearly legible label that includes the following information in Spanish. This information must be accurate and must not mislead the consumer about the nature and characteristics of Tequila:

a) The term "Tequila";

b) The category and class to which it belongs, in accordance with Chapter 5 of the regulations;

c) For tequilas mentioned in section 6.1.1.1.1 of the regulations, the name of the flavor or aromas added or that which predominates in the product must be indicated. The name of the color, if applicable, must also be stated. The name of the color may appear and be incorporated in any part of the label or package.

d) The net content in liters or milliliters, according to NOM-030-SCFI (5);

e) The alcoholic content in percentage of alcohol by volume at 20 ºC, which should be abbreviated as "% Alc. Vol";

f) The name or company name of the Authorized Producer or the factory where the Tequila is produced and, if applicable, of the approved bottler;

g) The address of the Authorized Producer or factory where the Tequila is produced and, if applicable, of the approved bottler;

h) The name of the registered Trademark or any other distinctive sign in accordance with the legislation, rules or regulations applicable in the place of sale, according to the co-responsibility agreement registered at IMPI;

i) The phrase "Made in Mexico", "Product of Mexico", "Made in Mexico", or other similar ones;

j) The official password, according to NOM-106-SCFI (6); accompanied by the registration number of the Authorized Producer mentioned in section 10.4 of this NOM;

k) Batch: each container must have engraved or marked the identification of the batch to which it belongs, with a coded indication. The lot identification added by the Authorized Producer or approved packer must not be altered or hidden in any way;

l) The precautionary warnings established in the sanitary legislation; and

m) Any other information required by other laws applicable to alcoholic beverages.

Tequila Labeling for Mexico

For marketing within Mexico, the essential information must be visible on the main display surface, including points a), b), c), d), e), and h). The rest of the information may be elsewhere on the label or package.

The "principal display surface" according to Mexican Official Standard NOM-030-SCFI-2006, refers to the area of the container of an alcoholic beverage that is most visible to the consumer at the point of sale. This area is essential because it is where the most relevant labeling information, such as the product's name and trademark, must be placed.

For containers that, due to their characteristics, have more than one side that can be considered as the main display surface, it is allowed to show the contents or net contents on two or more of these sides. This ensures that essential information is easily accessible to the consumer from different viewing angles.

The standard states that the principal display surface must clearly show the quantity of the product, and depending on the shape of the package, this area can be calculated in different ways, such as the area of a rectangle, a triangle, a circle or other special shapes. This is crucial in determining the minimum size of the numbers and the legibility of the information on the label.

Export Tequila Labeling

For products destined for export or packaged abroad, the primary information that must appear on the principal display surface includes items (a), (b), (c), and (h). Details such as origin, safety and traceability, as indicated in items i), j), and k), may be located elsewhere on the label. In addition, the class of Tequila, added flavors and aromas, and authenticity may be translated into other languages.

The labeling for export Tequila must also comply with the applicable standards for each destination country, although this information is not regulated by the CRT, it is important for the product to enter the destination country.

The information on the label must be real and verifiable

It is crucial that the commercial information does not contain text, images or descriptions that may confuse or mislead the consumer, avoiding inaccurate statements such as "100% natural" or "100% Mexican", unless they are verifiable and certified. Products that have an opinion, certificate or other document issued by accredited and approved entities will be recognized as compliant with the NOM.

These guidelines ensure that Tequila maintains its integrity and reputation as an emblematic product of Mexico, both in the domestic and international markets.

In accordance with the Federal Law on Metrology and Standardization (LFMN), if the information or data present on product labels, containers or packaging proves to be incorrect, the General Directorate of Standards (DGN) has the authority to require the pertinent modifications. The authorized producer or approved packer will be granted the period of time strictly necessary to make such corrections. During this period, the products that the authorized producer has in inventory or that are already in the distribution chain or points of sale may continue to be marketed. This does not affect the power to apply the corresponding sanctions.

To clarify the above mentioned in the previous paragraph, it is considered that the information or data on labels, containers or packaging are incorrect if they present the commercial information required by the Mexican Official Standard (NOM) in an inaccurate or false manner, or if they omit data or legends that may confuse the consumer about the real characteristics of the product purchased.

Tequila

Tequila, a distilled liquor made in a specific region of Mexico. Its production is based on the distillation of the fermented juice extracted from the central part of a plant called "blue agave", this part resembles a huge pineapple.
